📈 The latest startupdetector report couldn't have been better for me. - the number of newly founded German startups increased in Q1 2024 - a trend reversal we waited for some time new! - Leipzig and Dresden were the cities with the biggest increase of new startups (+41%, +36%), while Jena had the most financing rounds per capita - while many regions had a smaller number of new startups, Saxony increased most by 35% - the energy sector saw the strongest increase from all industries - our Smart Infrastructure Ventures ('SIVentures') portfolio company traide AI GmbH with their founder Leonie Althaus got featured next to SpinLab - The HHL Accelerator alumnus Dr. Jannik Lockl from inContAlert - our partners from TGFS Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen are ranked #5 in the most active VCs list. Smart Infrastructure Ventures ('SIVentures') among the top investors in AI All in all a great job Arnas Bräutigam & team

Start-ups in Europe: a light at the end of the tunnel - finally! This article by Nadine Schimroszik in Handelsblatt gives reason for hope for the tech ecosystem, as it summarises a development that has been tentatively emerging for some time: The number of new #start-ups in Germany is growing again, by 17 per cent, as shown by a comparison of the first quarter of 2024 with the same quarter of the previous year. 💡It is particularly interesting to see that most investments are being made in AI. An unmistakable sign that they continue to be a driver of innovation for the German startup ecosystem. We recently came to a similar conclusion with my team, as part of our analysis of the German startup landscape. Our conclusion: more and more funding are being mobilised for ♻️ #Greentech business ideas that are based on AI-based technologies and have a positive impact on our planet. 🔹 🔷 🔹 Can Industrial AI be a cure against the gradual deindustrialization of Germany? 🔹 🔷 🔹 The Pioneer, one of the leading German political and economic media, has released an article I wrote about the potential impact of Industrial AI yesterday. Germany with its rich tradition in engineering and industrial solutions is well placed to leverage AI to fuel the next wave of industrial innovation. A race that is still not run - as opposed to GenAI that is dominated by the large US tech giants and LLMs that are already commoditizing. A race that will likely leave room for several new German unicorns that can add to the industrial innovation process - ideally in a cooperation with established industrial players such as BMW, Mercedes, Siemens or Bosch. But it will require a significantly better availability of venture capital all the way from inception to a profitable business as well as a targeted industrial development policy to leverage this opportunity. Time for the industrial giant Germany to shed the sluggishness of recent years and remember the entrepreneurial spirit of its industrial forefathers such as Benz, Siemens, Bosch, Zeiss or Bayer. For those interested to read a little more - you can find the article on The Pioneer here (in German - have Google translate it for an English version): https://lnkd.in/eW9FWnzA (For those of you that do not yet have access to The Pioneer here is pdf-link: https://lnkd.in/er4_mVrV)

Why sharing my own podcast episodes still feels strange 🧐 Just 30 minutes ago, I met someone who told me they are starting an event next month for their new business, and I was their inspiration. Or rather, the insight I shared in my last podcast episode was. It still feels a bit weird to share my own podcast episodes. And? As long you belive it provides value, who cares what other people think! Recently, I had the amazing chance to be on Creatorway with the incredible Victoria Weber. Germany and Deep Tech: A Future-Defining Opportunity The Zukunftsstudie IX by MÜNCHNER KREIS e.V. highlights the transformative potential of Deep Tech to boost Germany's innovation capacity, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty. But success won’t happen automatically. For Deep Tech to transition from research to real-world application, we need: 👉 Companies willing to make long-term investments 👉 Research institutions that professionalize knowledge transfer 👉 Policymakers who create agile frameworks 👉 Stronger collaboration in innovation ecosystems, especially for SMEs and start-ups 👉 Investors ready to back groundbreaking technologies Where do we stand – and what is SAP doing? A key finding of the study: Turning research into commercial applications remains a significant challenge. This is exactly where we as SAP play a crucial role. As a global leader in enterprise software with over 50 years of experience, SAP is dedicated to driving innovation by bridging the gap between academic research and practical, commercially viable business solutions. Since 2019, we have been working closely with the Technische Universität München on deep tech topics such as different aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. For example, we have been working together on cutting-edge topics such as Generative AI, Deep Reinforcement Learning, Probabilistic Programming, and Explainable AI. By co-innovating and integrating these pioneering technologies into SAP solutions, we enable start-ups to test and scale their innovations in real-world business environments. This ensures that our customers benefit from forward-looking, practical solutions. This collaboration highlights our commitment to turning research results into actionable value for industries worldwide. The release of this study is a key highlight of the Münchner Kreis' 50th anniversary, where I am proud to serve on the board. The study underscores the value of the Münchner Kreis' work and why it is my mission to provide as many people as possible with access to this network to benefit from its insights and recommendations — because innovation is a shared responsibility that transcends individual stakeholders. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas! MÜNCHNER KREIS e.V. Michael Dowling Helmut Krcmar Dr. Rahild Neuburger Dr. Katharina Wollenberg Michael Wittmann Dr. Leonard Przybilla

We are in the midst of an energy transition, with a significant shift towards Electro mobility . While most of them focus on controlled CO2 emissions during the usage phase of EV's, it's also important to focus on the dark side of Electro mobility. Although EV's emit less carbon dioxide during the operation phase compared to the gasoline and hybrid vehicles, yet LCA results show that their production accounts for about 46% of total CO2 emissions occurring from production of all the three. Which is comparatively higher when compared to hybrid (31%) and gasoline (23%) vehicles in terms of overall carbon footprint. Furthermore, battery recycling is another significant disadvantage. Currently only 5% of the world's total EV batteries are recycled. The rest end up as landfills, contributing to a growing environmental burden. Being a geologist I agree there are environmental impacts associated with mining renewables but the effects can be mitigated through implementing proper measures and sustainable practices. In contrast increasing reliance on electro mobility can lead to electrical waste dumps in the future. Below is a very informative graph that illustrates the rise and fall of various technologies over time. Highlighting the trends in energy transition.

The Dresden-based company Wandelbots presented its new software "Nova" on Monday evening. This should make it possible for people without much prior knowledge to program robots. MDR SACHSEN has taken a look at what it is all about. Wandelbots boss Christian Piechnick will take the stage on Monday evening at the Albertinum in Dresden and promises nothing less than "the democratization of robotics". According to the company, it has developed a new robot operating system that should enable developers to program and optimize robots inexpensively and easily. And all this without being a "robotics expert" himself. "Nova is the first robot-independent operating system, which enables all developers out there to develop their own apps to automate production processes without being robot experts". Christian Piechnick, Founder of Wandelbots

Germany's startup ecosystem is a powerhouse waiting to fully unleash its potential in driving digital and sustainable transformation. But how do we make sure this happens? The Startup-Verband, the voice of German startups, addresses this head-on with their bold new initiative, "Innovationsagenda 2030: Weltklasse Made in Germany" (link in comments). This approach not only fosters a sense of ownership and loyalty among employees but also aligns their interests with the success of the business. Research shows that companies with employee ownership programs tend to have higher productivity and lower turnover rates. By giving employees a stake in the company's success, startups can create a more motivated and engaged workforce. #EmployeeOwnership #StartupCulture
